2. make viewing easier with this program - http://www.terragotech.com/solutions/map2pdf_thankyou_dl.php?product=reader
now if you have a laptop (or pocket pc) you are willing to bring along, you could get a gps receiver for it for like $50 and using a program like this one (memory-map navigator, $100, here - http://www.memory-map.com/) or some other you could import usgs maps into their software and have a pretty cool gps set-up for relatively little money...
