Don't want to waste starting a new thread about the shop....
I emptied approx 54 quarts of used oil from the shop at Autozone on Sat :D it was a crazy amount of black toxic waste pouring hahaha. But the craziest thing is if the other two containers with oil filters on them and those disgusting soiled boxes with bottles in them all contain used oil, then I only got rid of less than half of our total amount of used oil!
And I'm not going to bother asking whose it is, but whoever put bottles of something in 3 white plastic trash bags needs to take care of that crap because I was going to empty it and since it is in the used oil pile I assumed it was oil. Well it turned out to be some clearish liquid that smells insanely bad, I have a really strong stomach and this was very close to making me throw up. Please who's ever it is, clean it up and get it out of the shop, if that shit leaks all over it is going to be a nightmare getting rid of the intense smell and I don't know what the hell is clear like that and smells so wrong. Please just take care of it, we don't need to call you out or know who did it, but just for everyone's sake and not putting your disgusting garbage on someone else just take care of it sometime soon before it starts getting really hot in there.
Hopefully in the next few weeks as Tomas gets more of his fittings and things out of the boxes and on to his truck, we can do a cleaning day to get rid of a lot of the junk at the shop and make more room in there. I'm happy to take ppl's used oil out of there, because I change my oil a lot there and contribute quite a bit to the stock pile we have, and if I'm taking any used oil there may as well take as much as I can. If you guys put coolant or trans in a container then label it so we know what's up and dont dump it at Autozone and go Oh Scheisse!! hahaha.

Pretty sure engine oil and trans fluid can be mixed. Thats what the autozone guy told me like a couple years ago. Also i think im the only one with coolant, but we (I) can arrange a free drop-off with waste managment if someone can drive it over there.
brian
04-28-2008, 08:35 AM
I'm pretty sure we'd have to schedule an appointment for the hazardous waste dumpage. How much fluids are we talking about here.
bomber
04-28-2008, 09:54 AM
Well if those other two oil containers are full and the other bottles in the used oil area of the shop all contain oil, then approx another 55 quarts or so. I know that over by the fuse panel there is a Motocraft 5 quart bottle labeled Trans Fluid. I have about 2 gallons of coolant and will add from my Ranger in a 5 gal bucket under it right now. If Tomas has some stored coolant than that had to be added in.
Tomas, I don't know why the autozone guy would tell you that unless he knows that the warnings on the front of the used oil container at the store are incorrect, as there is a large USED OIL ONLY sticker on the front of it. If we can take trans there too then sweet, but the steekers say otherwise so we'll have to inquire about that.
I can't believe they didn't say anything to me cause I had to make three diff runs from the Volvo to the back of the shop each time with four 5 quart bottles.
Also, were the older Rotella bottles full of used oil? Their caps weren't seal and the oil in them was dark, but it had a hint of blue rather than the brown in used oil, and it didn't smell like anything. I dumped it so if this was good oil that happened to just be sitting in the used oil corner, my bad :D. Jesse what are you putting the Rotella in, your Ranger?
brian

ua taco
04-28-2008, 11:59 AM
I think all "oils" - engine, diff, tranny - consist of very similar stuff and there is no wrong mixing them together, but don't quote me on it.
as far as anything else, such as coolant, break fluid, etc. - call 858-694-7000 and schedule an appointment (only for saturdays) at miramar. free for san diego residents, just bring your proof of residency - http://www.sandiego.gov/environmental-services/miramar/hhwtransfac.shtml . I've done it a number of times.
masta-t
04-28-2008, 12:02 PM
i think it depends on where they are going. Some sites are saying dont mix any of those, some say just motor oil, tranny fluid, and gear oil can be mixed, and some say only motor and gear oil can be mixed. Probably have to call up the place they will be recycled at.
grasinski
04-28-2008, 04:04 PM
I'm pretty sure you guys are all full of shit with the mixing, so I have consulted my old friends in the county recycling and landfills department. As far as I can recall, for recycling purposes, it is NOT ok to mix. If you do mix a ton of different kinds together, it is all just plain old hazardous waste, and somewhere waaaayyyyyy down the road, after it goes to the happy healthy safe hazardous waste disposal facility, it gets burned in China or dumped in the ocean and ends up killing baby seals or in your ground water giving you some health issue sooner than later.
So it's all a matter of whether you'd like to do your part or not. I will get official word/rules soon, so hang on to it; it might save you some money and time.

Thanks Christine. Like I was saying earlier, the very large steeeeeeekers on the front of the bin say USED OIL ONLY! so I interpret that as motor oil, gear oil, and diesel oil stuff. I try to be somewhat organized and wouldn't mix stuff in one container anyways for OCD's sake haha. That'd be cool to get an official word on this stuff for sure.

RIDEitINTOtheGROUND
04-29-2008, 11:31 AM
cuz it's called "fluid" it can't be oil?? is that what I'm interpreting ur interpretation to be joser? I'm pretty sure u can mix any OIL and that includes the crap u guys already said, and if christine is correct, then that means autozone isn't recycling it they are just disposing of it according to regs?
ua taco
04-29-2008, 12:37 PM
tranny "fluid" is still OIL, same basic chemicals as engine oil or gear oil, just different viscosity and additives
grasinski
04-29-2008, 07:38 PM
ok enginerds, here is the answer direct from my old boss, in charge of managing auto recycling for the county.
"You are correct, oil must be kept separate, and actually it helps with the recycling if all are kept separate. They can go to www.wastefreesd.org or call the hotline for disposal options 1-877-713-2784."
Chances are that the autozone may be just disposing of the mixtures, and not recycling it.
ua taco
04-29-2008, 09:12 PM
I am still not sure about this...
the website listed just says you can recycle "motor oil", but doesn't really say anything about tranny or gear oil specifically.
the ex-boss saying "oil should be kept separate" doesn't really clarify anything since as mentioned earlier - tranny fluid, engine oil, and gear oil are all "oils" composed of similar molecules; while coolant, break fluid, etc. are not which is why we are all sure they gotta be discarded as hazardous waste.

That is an incorrect interpretation of my statement regarding my interpretation of the sticker posted on the front of the oil collection bin. My effort was to be very simple in its meaning and it was my simple, straightforward interpretation of the USED OIL ONLY sticker, which was that since they did not list tranny fluid then they didn't want tranny fluid placed in this collection bin. I followed my statement with a desire for an official word on the matter, because of the fact that I did not know if there was more meaning to the message on the sticker than my interpretation. Simply put, I knew there could be more to the sticker's meaning than my strict interpretation, as we've seen holds true by the attached information in these recent posts.

the statement about keeping oil separate refers to engine/motor oil. it all just really depends on how much you care. mix 'em, its tougher to re-refine.

05-06-2008, 11:59 PM
I don't see why I can mix dino and synthetic motor oils of all different grades and viscosities with different additive packages but I cannot mix them with similar non motor oils. I imagine most used oil is burned in furnaces and generators anyways at which point it really doesn't matter. The more difficult it is too recycle the more people are just going to dump their oil in their backyard
where is this re-refined oil going ... exxon superflow brand oil?

I found lids for the 5 gallon buckets at Payton's, unfortunately, Autozone's 5 gallon buckets are smaller than the ones sold at Payton's. Next time I go back to the shop, I'll swing by Payton's and pick up their 5 gallon buckets. If anyone's going to be at the shop this week, you can toss in the oil filters, bottles, etc...into the black plastic bin sitting on top of the tubes. Just be sure to use one of the empty boxes next to the front door (except for the one with the leaf spring hardware ;D) or line it with garbage bags (it's Sean and Anna's black bin).
Maybe next Saturday I'll get a chance to dump this off at Miramar, depending on whether or not I get my oil in this week.

Haha so most of you guys know I had a long, frustrating night Friday prepping the Volvo for its rally debut. I forgot to tell you guys that during the night around 3 am, I flushed the toilet and it never stopped filling back up with water. I came back in after hearing it for a few min and the tank lid was dripping a lot. So I open the lid and this little plastic tube part ruptured and was spraying water inside. So i had to grab my flashlight and find the water shut off valve. Just another part to my fun filled all nighter...

I threw the tube at the ground and the spider dropped to the ground. I ensured it could not threaten anyone again hahaha. Damn that was a bad start to the morning...

alright doods, i'm trying to come up with ideas for mananging trash without illegally dumping it into various bins. One idea is to talk with Cathy about having a bin brought to her place, but i could see some issues with that. My dad said we could bring a bag to our house every week. I think we could start with that and see how it goes. Some of the larger items need to be dealt with too, such as factory stuff, like dashes, panels, windows etc. I want to take some of the factory stuff i pulled to hwy 67 truck dismantlers. Prob take my old explorer axle there too. Oil is always an issue, we should take turns maybe every month or so taking it. I think BK has done the most, i'll take the next batch. I think another shop cleanup day is in order and then we can establish a good waste managment system. Its tough since we all dont use the shop equally (BK and Joser need to get their asses in gear and work on them trucks!) but we should establish a solid system on the waste dealings. Categories of waste are as follows:
Oil
Misc Fluids
Trash
Recyclables
Scrap Metal
Used parts
Trash, oil, and recyclables will be the most frequent, followed by scrap metal. Everything else prob doesn't need a system, but does need to be taken care of. When are you guys available for a clean up day?
jmelrose
01-10-2010, 04:56 PM
I am out for the next 2 weeks but I agree that another clean up day is in order. For trash I think we are fine with taking it to my place or one if the many dumpsters in OB. My old axle can go too.
After one massive clean out I doubt trash will be much of an issue

don't do it.
what exactly you need it for and have you won a lottery lately? ;)
if i did, i would have a shop like the Herbst's :D
For an immediate use, i would like it for my leaf spring bushings so I dont have to leave the super duty on jacks overnight. Also the Focus wheel bearings need a press, and there are a couple other possibilities for the focus' front suspension that i might need it for.
Plus it would be nice to have one at the shop.
regarding the 12T, i'm not sure. I thought it would be sufficient for anything i'm thinking of right now. Billy you have any other ideas on what would require more than 12T?
ua taco
12-28-2010, 01:30 PM
I had to use a 20 ton press a couple years ago to press out my front wheel bearings, so I would think 20 ton would be sufficient. some of those bearings are really hard to press out. I would think bushings should be easier.
I am not saying that a shop press is a bad idea, just saying that if you only need a press for very very occasional use perhaps your money is better spent elsewhere, considering that you can occasionally rent bearing press kit from autozone. But it's your money so obviously you do what you think is best.
BTW, I've used a press occasionally at work too if necessary.
RIDEitINTOtheGROUND
12-30-2010, 03:17 AM
what tonnage was the press we had to use for my caster bushings ilya? I thought it was 50 or 70 whatever the biggest one was. I remember it was sexy time explosion when they finally went BOOM (removing)
I was looking at a press for a bit for doing those.. I just recall people saying on forums it's worth getting the big one so you dont eventually have to get 2 because you will end up needing more.
looks like the big jump is from 20 to 50T on harbor freight. i'd split this one with you if you are set on buying one, but this is backordered. maybe find it locally?
http://www.harborfreight.com/20-ton-a-frame-industrial-heavy-duty-floor-shop-press-37999.html

tool list for the shop?
DRILL PRESS: A tall upright machine useful for suddenly snatching flat metal bar stock out of your hands so that it smacks you in the chest and flings your beer across the room, denting the freshly-painted project which you had carefully set in the corner where nothing could get to it.
WIRE WHEEL: Cleans paint off bolts and then throws them somewhere under the workbench with the speed of light . Also removes fingerprints and hard-earned calluses from fingers in about the time it takes you to say, 'Oh sh--!
SKIL SAW: A portable cutting tool used to make studs too short.
PLIERS: Used to round off bolt heads. Sometimes used in the creation of blood-blisters.
BELT SANDER: An electric sanding tool commonly used to convert minor touch-up jobs into major refinishing jobs.
HACKSAW: One of a family of cutting tools built on the Ouija board principle... It transforms human energy into a crooked, unpredictable motion, and the more you attempt to influence its course, the more dismal your future becomes.
VISE-GRIPS: Generally used after pliers to completely round off bolt heads. If nothing else is available, they can also be used to transfer intense welding heat to the palm of your hand.
OXYACETYLENE TORCH: Used almost entirely for lighting various flammable objects in your shop on fire. Also handy for igniting the grease inside the wheel hub out of which you want to remove a bearing race.
TABLE SAW: A large stationary power tool commonly used to launch wood projectiles for testing wall integrity.
HYDRAULIC FLOOR JACK: Used for lowering an automobile to the ground after you have installed your new brake shoes, trapping the jack handle firmly under the bumper.
BAND SAW: A large stationary power saw primarily used by most shops to cut good aluminum sheet into smaller pieces that more easily fit into the trash can after you cut on the inside of the line instead of the outside edge.
TWO-TON ENGINE HOIST: A tool for testing the maximum tensile strength of everything you forgot to disconnect.
PHILLIPS SCREWDRIVER: Normally used to stab the vacuum seals under lids or for opening old-style paper-and-tin oil cans and splashing oil on your shirt; but can also be used, as the name implies, to strip out Phillips screw heads.
STRAIGHT SCREWDRIVER: A tool for opening paint cans. Sometimes used to convert common slotted screws into non-removable screws and butchering your palms.
PRY BAR: A tool used to crumple the metal surrounding that clip or bracket you needed to remove in order to replace a 50 cent part.
HOSE CUTTER: A tool used to make hoses too short.
HAMMER: Originally employed as a weapon of war, the hammer nowadays is used as a kind of divining rod to locate the most expensive parts adjacent the object we are trying to hit.
UTILITY KNIFE: Used to open and slice through the contents of cardboard cartons delivered to your front door; works particularly well on contents such as seats, vinyl records, liquids in plastic bottles, collector magazines, refund checks, and rubber or plastic parts. Especially useful for slicing work clothes, but only while in use.
SON-OF-A-BITCH TOOL: (A personal favorite!) Any handy tool that you grab and throw across the garage while yelling 'Son of a BITCH!' at the top of your lungs. It is also, most often, the next tool that you will need.

Nice Ilya.
Some of my notable crap:
-4" Makita angle grinder with a wrench. I'll check to see if wrench fits other grinder
-quick grip style clamps
-1 wire shelving unit
-1 inflatable beer island/cooler
- some other shit I can't remember right now. I'll add to the spreadsheet once I have it all there and in front of me.

yeah i put it together and made a mount for it, just need to get some hardware to bolt it down. I think some new locking casters are going to be required on the cart tho. The 8" is definitely a welcome boost in power. Billy did you get a wire wheel too?

I got rid of the old battery by the door.
I also brought a small shop vac. it is tiny but it works. we'll see whether or not it is enough for our needs. it has a foam filter and a dry reusable filter that goes over the foam sleeve. please remove the reusable dry filter if you are going to use this vacuum to suck in any fluids - it is easy to remove, just lift the plastic ring holding it over the foam sleeve.
I also brought a bunch of black spray paint and primer. It is on the shelf where the rest of Jesse's cans are. Feel free to use it.
Headed to the shop after work today to work on the FJ a bit.
