View Full Version : 500 pre run this weekend
logistics as per conversation w/ collin this am
collin leaves tomorrow am w/ recon members eric, albert, greg
billy and crew leave tomorrow pm
corona hotel on main drag in ensenada
doc leaves el centro about 3 am,saturday, hooks up with anyone who wants to go (hi, bk) at about 5 to 6 am, arrive ensenada hopefully before 830 to 900
eric and billy will ride mikes sky ranch loop. chase by doc, ilya (YES! OFF-ROAD ACTION!). gas on return loop near mikes, logistics of who's gonna get there first to be calculated later. then follow to rm 280 (hwy 1) so probably bikes will just have to wait for us to get there.
collin albert and greg will be running st tomas towards ensenada
i haven't been told if kathy is driving or riding and i'm sure other details remain to be determined.
anyone who wants to go w/ doc, let me know (sieteseiscero) 791 0177

yo pops, thanks for posting up the info. kathy is coming and she was maybe going to drive ilya's truck if we needed extra chase, but sounds like we have extra drivers so she'll probably ride with you or ilya. is anyone chasing for the beach loopers? are all 3 of those guys riding?

sounds like a plan!
thanks a lot for posting this up!
and yes I have a number of unfortunate experiences with a shovel...
Unfortunately, when collin and i were on the phone the plan seemed good, but this afternoon, upon detailed consideration and after doing a little math, it became obvious that the bikes would be running out of gas. one option would be to have the riders carry extra....not optimally safe in my mind, and then when you do the math it probably would require two gallons, not just one...just not the way to go. Then later, during a visit with chip at threat racing he pointed out that if all of our support was from the east and there was any need to give support to the riders in the soutwest section of the course, response time was likely to approach the ten hour mark, considering distances and terrain; not good.
soooooooo......Ilya, i think you and Kathy will need to take Billy to the start, race mile 122, and i'll need to be in the southwest at the san telmo road going toward race mile 186. You would also need to bring gas to where they get near trinidad before they turn west, about rm 149 or 150 as i recall. these are essentially the same pit stops that will be in the race.
i'm sure you'll find some way to have fun without my company, just remember, i don't recall that Kathy is shovel certified yet.

this sounds fine too, doc!
I looked at the map and your thinking makes sense. I still have a bunch of detail questions but I am sure I'll get them all answered tommorrow by Billy and others.
see you in Baja! :)

we are back and unfortunately Billy will not be racing this baja 500 due to a broken fibula (the smaller of the two main bones below knee) and possibly some more damage in the knee area, but there is always another baja. I'll let Billy fill in the details of the story...
some pics of the damage:

12:03 PM Chris: you exciting about this weekend?
don't crash and jack something
12:04 PM or is that bad luck, should I say "break a leg"
me: lol no u were good the first time
hells ya im excited
ya so my knee got stretched pretty good as i came off the bike, it snagged on the bars and i felt it get funky. not sure if that can break it the way it is or if it was from the impact after, still have to see ortho to get further look at the much more critical tissue status
the results of that will determine how soon i'm building a truck, or maybe a buggy.. hmmm
I'm shooting for no further problems with the tissues and a quickie 6week bone recovery so i can finish the d38 season

Hey Billy,
Paul called me and told me about what happened to you this past weekend. So sorry to hear the news. I'm sure you were looking forward to the 500, but there will be another day.
Everyone here at Roadrunners wish our brother a complete and speedy recovery. If you need anything at all let one of us know.
Very best regards

Thanks doods, I know whatever state of cripple we may be in (jesse) we'll still be havin lots of fun rideclub style
Kirk! welcome to RCSD! Thanks for all the concern, word gets around quick in the D38/Roadrunners family! I definitely consider myself very lucky to have so many folks lookin out for me, I hear from immediate family, Rideclubbers, the Sysco crew, and D38 bros every day making sure that I'm alright. nurse Kathy is doing a tremendous job helping me
not stress out the injury and keep it elevated 90% of the time. hellooooooo nurse.
D38 thread if anyone is curious http://amad38.com/messageboard/viewtopic.php?p=3765#3765
Ortho followup: Dr. Schwartz tells me that my fibula broke due to a twisting action where essentially the tendon attached to the end of the bone snapped the tip of the bone off. Preliminary leg jiggling shows some loosness in the ACL/PCL type directions, but no conclusions will be made till we see an MRI. I have officially experienced a "knee dislocation"
jmelrose
05-23-2007, 10:47 AM
Is his schwartz bigger than yours?
nasty on the dislocation bit, but hopefully the tendons will snug back up as the bone heals
bomber
05-23-2007, 10:52 AM
Knee dislocations and elbow dislocations are dangerous bc if those do not get put back in in a timely manner, you lose circulation to the distal end of those appendages and if that is not corrected then it's amputation time! Did your knee experienc a subluxation then? Also, are you on cruches or in a wheeliechair?
Damn u Melrose, u post sniper!
RIDEitINTOtheGROUND
05-23-2007, 11:52 AM
where's tomas?... sniper in the bushes...
ya the doctor told me about the circulation/subluxation (is that just for spinal?) nerve risks but i did not have any o dat. first check after every crash is can i wiggle my toes/fingers, and i still have full control/mobility/feeling in my foot. i'm pretty sure that i was 'relocated' by the time i hit the ground, or the ground is what smushed it back in there.

eeew. sounds pleasant : ) glad you're doing well b. if there is no need for surgery, what do you think the heal time will be?
bomber
05-23-2007, 01:23 PM
I am not sure on the spinal thing with subluxing, only because I was taught that term in sports med. and it applied to any joint. But when I looked it up right now it said "partial dislocation" and then another line said in reference to vertebrae.
U in a wheel chair or on crutches?

I haven't seen a post telling us the whole story behind the injury. Under what circumstances did this accident happen. Did you hit a rock or maybe swap your back end around? How fast were you going? Something caused you to get thrown off, give us details.
Have fun with the MRI. I had one on my knee, football injury, it's incredibly boring. In fact I began to fall asleep towards the end. Fortunately I only ended up with a slightly torn meniscus and bruised bone marrow.
Get well soon, and make sure to get a temporary handicapped placard if you can. Might as well get something good out of this.

ran out of talent. :D

Allow me to fill in some blanks...
What happend: I ran outa talent and suspension at the same time. I could have been riding more conservatively, I can't blame the bike, I'm not a noob, and I've had lots of time on the ol' 650. There was a large G-out mid-whoop pack at one of the forks in the road, whoops were goin fine but after that G my rythm was all off and the bike started tacking. I went in to a pretty standard tank-slapper ejection, but was unfortunate enough to have my left foot catch the bars on the way off as the bike was on the way down. Most of the wrenching came from that, there may have been more when I hit the dirt but I'm not sure. Some quad guys picked up the bike for me and Eric from Recon escorted me back towards the truck. It was good to have radio coms for when I got back in range with Ilya and Kathy, takes a lot of the guess work out of it!
aka...i was too busy thinking about how badass my mufflerless exhaust sounds. ;D
